It’s Friday and that means I get to introduce my newest muse, Cindy Wei Zhang, to all of you, my lovely followers. I know I left you hanging last week, but I think this will make up for my lack in accountability.
I happened to stumbled across her brand one day on Instagram, and quickly realized she was a designer I wanted, no sorry, NEEDED, to know. Aside from the brand’s eye catching artistic glossy photography, Ms. Zhang’s designs are sophisticated, mature, and well executed. They are vibrant and breathtaking.
The Cindy Wei Zhang label was established in 2012, as a creative outlet to express the designer’s life experiences in both China and Australia. Through her designs and creative intuition, she modifies historical Chinese fashion (obviously my favorite part), and reinterprets Chinese traditions in modern contexts. Her unique execution of prints, shapes, and defined silhouettes are what truly drive her from season to season.
The collection showcased in the gallery above is called “Once Upon A Moment.” The collection, made of chiffon, organza, and satin, featured prints inspired by the Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” which is about Buddhist Monk Xuan Zang’s pilgrimage to Central Asia and India, detailing his hardships and struggles. The designer aimed to communicate, through the clothes, the continuation of that journey, while also mirroring her own trials and tribulations in creating the collection. Ms. Zhang and her team shot the spring look book in the Gobi Desert.
The label has been worn by known Chinese celebrities in TV commercials, popular talk shows, print advertisements and editorials for many brands. It has also won awards for reviving interest in China’s hidden cultural gems by reintroducing them to mainstream fashion.
